I can’t sleep because my company informed me that I got a bad review from a customer

Main Post:

I am currently experiencing difficulty sleeping due to the notification from my employer regarding a negative review received from a customer.

As a professional plumber based in Massachusetts, I received a call last night from a customer whom I had previously attended to earlier in the day. The customer reported an urgent issue with their basement bathroom, which was experiencing a backup and subsequent flooding. I promptly contacted the customer approximately five minutes after their departure, informing them that I could provide assistance. However, I explained that it would take approximately 45 minutes for me to reach their location. The customer, in a nonchalant manner, expressed that there was no rush and suggested that I could attend to the issue the following day. As a service plumber, I was unable to accommodate this request due to prior scheduled appointments. Additionally, the customer mentioned that they were expecting guests for dinner at 6 o'clock, and it was already 5:15 in the evening.

In an attempt to troubleshoot the situation remotely, I requested the customer to run the showers upstairs to determine if they were experiencing any backup or exacerbation of the existing clog. To my relief, the showers were not exhibiting any signs of backup or worsening of the clog. It was at this point that I recalled the presence of a pump in the area where I had been working. I proceeded to inform the customer and their spouse that I suspected the sewage ejector pump may have become unplugged. I then told the customer to open the access the panel, revealing the plug, and promptly turned it on. I expressed uncertainty as to why the pump had become unplugged. Perhaps my assistant may have been responsible, however, there would have been no valid reason for them to disconnect it. Therefore, I do not believe it was his doing. I offer my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused. Furthermore, I had offered to personally travel to the location to rectify the water issue, but they declined my assistance. Subsequently, after the phone call ended, they proceeded to leave a negative review, falsely claiming that I refused to attend the site due to the distance, which was a 45-minute drive away. Now, my company wishes to hold a meeting with me. As I am currently the sole plumber employed by the company, I am concerned about the possibility of termination. Has anyone ever experienced a situation where their reputation was tarnished online due to negative circumstances at work? I find myself unable to sleep, consumed by thoughts of this impending meeting with the company executives.

I kindly request your guidance and assistance in addressing this matter. Your prompt attention to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Top Comment: Some customers are just assholes. If the people you work for don't realize that, then you work at the wrong shop. Quit worrying about it.

Had a local plumbing company try to scam me 30k, what options do I have?

Main Post:

I came back from a work trip to sewer backing up in the basement fixtures (roommate and pet sitter were at the house and neither ever went down to the basement to even know). I called a plumber with good reviews on google and they came to check things out. They snaked the sewer line and then fed a camera through the toilet and showed me on their tiny display that the old cast iron pipe was cracked the whole way to they city tie in. They quoted me 30k for the job of replacing the sewer line and said they could start next week.

I went to work in shock, and all my coworkers said that the job should be about a third of that and to get other opinions. So I called some 8 other plumbers to come out to give a quote. I told them the info I had been given and I think all said they would do their own diagnostic first if I went with them to verify. One went super high at 50k, the others were around 13k. One called me while he was writing up the quote and said that there were too many red flags with the first company (they went through the toilet instead of the super accessible clean out opening on the sewer line, they said it was more than 12ft deep in the yard requiring special equipment when he only measured 10ft, they only gave me one grainy photo of a crack, etc) and asked if he could run a camera through the next day at no charge. He came out and we ran that camera all the way to the city tie in four times (nice big camera with good lighting, big display, he gave me photos and the video recording to use even if I go with other plumbers) and there isn’t one single crack in the whole pipe. Some other guys for their company were doing a job nearby so he called them to come be more eyes on it, and all three of the new guys confirmed that while there was some rust and scaling, not one crack. They were joking that the first guy must have just seen dollar signs when they saw me.

For context, I’m a young female who bought the house solo. It looks nice inside, because I thrifted and refurbished each piece of furniture I have. I’m living paycheck to paycheck and am thankful that I was able to invest in a home. I am furious and hurt and angry at the first company. I want to write a review warning others, especially single women, of their predatory ways. Should I do this? Is there anything else I can do?

On the flip side, I at least want to pay the good plumbers for the camera work that saved me and thank them for their honesty. Any suggestions of what to send them or do?

Why does Bradford White get such poor reviews on places like Amazon?

Main Post:

I've been researching natural gas water heaters and all the pro seem to be in favor of BW. But when I read the reviews on places like Amazon, BW seems to get terrible reviews. I am trying to make sense of what's going on. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Edit: Thank you all for the comments!

Top Comment:

BW doesn't sell to consumers, so 99 percent of the reviews you see there are probably BS, or they got sold Chinese "bradford white" heaters, and think they are they same thing. The only way I know to get a real bradford white heater is through a plumber. Their reasoning is they don't want non professionals installing them.

Second thoughts about working for roto-rooter

Main Post:

As the title suggest I applied to roto-rooter as a drain tech and I'm now having second thoughts after looking up indeed reviews of people who worked at roto rooter. I don't think I would be comfortable buying my own work van and having to basically work on commission just to earn a living wage.

Has anyone here worked for roto rooter?, I feel like this might be a good chance for me to finally get into a trade after looking for 3 months but the negatives are looming over me like a dark cloud.

Top Comment: Lol, roto rooter is not a way to get into the trades. It is a last resort for the worst of the worst and the desperate. Run away as fast as you can and look for any other opportunity

Plumber company recommendation?

Main Post:

Looking for the plumber company recommendations with great reviews/availability and that don’t overcharge. Need to fix a minor bathroom leak.

Top Comment: Hans Plumbing - 425 313-0203. Mark, the one who came out, was originally in a father-son business that we loved (Schuerman Plumbing). Solid work, honest guy. When you call, the lady answering the phone can suggest a ballpark estimate. Typically there's a minimum time for the call (because it takes them time to drive there).
